Staff Spotlight: Christy McClain, KC Regional Director

What is your name?

Christy McClain

What is your role at ARC Physical Therapy+?

Regional Director for 10 Kansas City Metro clinics

What year did you begin working at ARC Physical Therapy+?

Where are you from?

San Diego, California. I moved to the KC area in 1995 and have been here since. (I did try going back to San Diego for 1 year, 2015-2016, but the cost of living was ridiculous and the pay was so much less).

Where did you go to school?

I received my bachelor’s in Psychology from Rockhurst College, and my Masters in PT at Rockhurst University – interesting, both are the same school, it just grew in size between 1998 and 2000 that is changed from a College to a University).

Who or what inspired you to get into the physical therapy space?

I was inspired by a wonderful PTA (Mary Jones) who helped me become a better person. She helped me see that even though my early years were not supported, I was in charge of who and what I could become as an adult. She guided me down this path by encouraging me to not let my past affect my future. She believed in me when no one else did (including myself). I was able to get my GED and continue my education, after dropping out of high school in the 9th grade, and ultimately becoming a physical therapist.

What do you like most about your work at ARC Physical Therapy+?

I am fortunate to work alongside the best therapists around. I enjoy the different perspectives and the personalities of our team at ARCPT+. I love helping patients, therapists and support staff get better or be better. I am proud to be part of an organization that really cares about our patients and attempts to provide the best care possible in the best environment.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about the body or physical therapy?

I would like people to know that we are not just doing exercises. As professionals, we have a multitude of skills to help our patients get better. We then teach our patients many of those skills so that they can eventually care for their own injuries/deficits.

Are you involved with any outside organizations? If so, what?

I have done some sporadic volunteer work in homeless shelters and serve as a treating therapist in free health clinics.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I do a lot of reading in my free time. I like to be outside to exercise so when the weather is nice, I try to get out as much as possible. I enjoy hiking, biking, swimming, and canoeing. I like to travel, eat (so going to fun restaurants) and try new things whenever I can. I also spend a ton of time interacting with my grown kids, talking, texting and snap chatting. I have two wonderful children and they make my life so much better and brighter.

How do you like to celebrate a win or a good day?

Celebrating with the people I care about.

What is your favorite quote or saying?

If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving a different one.

Favorite Sports Team?

Chargers, until they moved to Los Angeles, so now the Chiefs.

Sweet or salty?

Sweet, I could eat dessert first always. Yummy

Coffee or tea?

Coffee addict. Thank goodness it’s a plant 🙂

Beach or mountains?

I absolutely love both. Outside is better no matter what the setting.

Go out or stay in?

I could do either. I love being at home and cozy on the couch but if I go out with good people, then I love that too.

Anything else you’d like to share?

I enjoy helping people. I love to see a change in someone who is skeptical about getting better. Obviously in my role now I hope to be helping the clinicians I work with get better and grow into the roles they take on so that they need me less.
