Meet Occupational Therapist/Certified Hand Therapist: Jacob Lenox

How long have you been a Certified Hand Therapist/Occupational Therapist?
I’ve been an Occupational Therapist for 4.5 years and a Certified Hand Therapist for 1.5 years.

What clinic do you treat out of?
Independence, Missouri

What got you interested in being an Occupational Therapist in the first place?
My favorite class in high school was anatomy and I got really interested in pursuing health professions. I initially thought I wanted to work in pediatrics (being a camp counselor in high school) and chose to become an Occupational Therapist. However, I quickly fell in love with the outpatient setting for OT and the path required to become a Certified Hand Therapist.

Why do you love being an Occupational Therapist?
I love when I get a new patient and see all the ways I can help improve their daily functional activities and quality of life. I get to meet new friends (patients) daily — it’s a good feeling being able to make an impact on their lives. Also, this profession practices what they preach – we all try to promote health and wellness; we, too, try and be active and healthy in our daily lives.

What is a fun fact about you?
I have bowled a perfect game (300). I won a trip to the super bowl before. I lived in California for a couple years.

What makes you unique as an Occupational Therapist?
Being a male (just kidding). I make my sessions fun and won’t let you leave without being in a good mood.

What is something you wish people knew about occupational therapy or hand therapy?
That we really like when patients bring in snacks. We spend a lot of time and energy to get our CHT credentials – we do it because we truly love what we do.
