Meet Mary Calys, DPT, CLT, Director, Cancer Rehab Center of Excellence

Mary is a Physical Therapist and the Director of our Cancer Rehab Center of Excellence. She has spent 17+ years treating patients and the last 13 years founding and directing the North Kansas City Hospital Cancer Rehab and Wellness Center which provided physical therapy services to patients throughout the cancer continuum for treatment of cancer-related fatigue, chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, lymphedema, pain, and pelvic floor dysfunction.

Mary served for 13 years on the APTA Oncology Board of Directors as the Public Relations Chair and currently serves on the Kansas City Cancer Action Board of Directors. Mary’s education includes a Bachelor of Social Work from The University of Kansas and a Master of Physical Therapy and Doctorate in Physical Therapy from The University of Kansas Medical Center.

As the Director of the Cancer Rehab Center of Excellence, Mary and her team offer direct patient-therapist interaction, motivational coaching, and ongoing communication from the time of diagnosis through survivorship care.

Common conditions they treat are:

  • Cancer-related fatigue
  • Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy
  • Balance impairments
  • Strength and mobility deficits
  • Lymphedema of the limbs, trunk, head and neck
  • Fibrotic tissue changes as a result of surgery and radiation
  • Pain resulting from cancer, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and targeted therapies
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction

Mary and her husband are food and wine enthusiasts. She is a lover of the arts, ballroom dancing and especially the opera. She is also a self-proclaimed fashion aficionado. Her life goals are, “to visit as many beautiful beaches as I can, to live well to the ripe age of 100, and to bring joy to each day.” Mary and her husband have a blended family of 5 sons, 6 grandchildren, and 1 more grandchild due in 2019.

The new Cancer Rehab Center of Excellence is open within three of our existing clinic locations: Overland Park, Kansas, Kansas City, Missouri, and Liberty, Missouri. The clinics are currently accepting new patients and making appointments at 855-410-2266.
